Migos is an American hip hop group that’s composed of three rappers who go by the names of Takeoff, Offset, and Quavo. They formed the group back in 2008, back in Atlanta, Georgia.

The trio is currently managed by Coach K and they;ve been collaborating with popular producers such as DJ Durel, Metro Boomin, and Zaytoven.

They’re known for being one of the pioneers of trap music and popular trends such as the “dab”. The rap group released their debut single “Versace” which became a huge commercial success.

In order to increase their popularity, they continued to release more hit singles like “Look at My Dab” in 2015. Some of their songs have also reached the top 10 of the “Billboard Hot 100”.

Early Life of the Group

To know more about the origin of the rap group, let’s talk about who these three rappers are.

Quavo 

Quavious Keyate Marshall or Quavo, was born on April 2, 1991, in Athens, Georgia. His mother worked as a hairdresser while his father died while he was still young. 

The young Quavo then attended Berkmar High School and even joined their football team as a quarterback in his senior year. Though he’s had a good track record in school, he eventually dropped out in just a few months before graduation.

Offset

Kiari Kendrell Cephus or professionally known as Offset, was born on December 14, 1991, in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Both him and Quavo are actually cousins and were raised together, along with takeoff, in Gwinnett County. 

Takeoff

Kirshnik Khari Ball, or more commonly known as Takeoff, was born on June 18, 1994, making him the youngest member of the group. He was born in Gwinnett County, which was close to Atlanta. While growing up, he was raised alongside the other members of the group.

Career in the Rap Industry

Growing up, the three boys didn’t have that much in common with each other. Though one of the things which bonded together was through rap. Quavo and Takeoff had a headstart with rap as they have already started as early as eight grade. 

Migos

By 2008, they’ve formed Migos, though it was initially called “Polo Club”. They then released their first mixtape titled “Juug, Season”. By 2012, they then proceeded to make another mixtape “No Label”.

The following year, Migos proceeded to release their debut single “Versace” which was placed in their mixtape “Y.R.N. (Young Rich Niggas)”. It became so successful that it managed to reach the “Billboard Hot 100” chart. Their single also managed to get into Rolling Stone’s “The Best 100 Songs of 2013” and XXL’s “The 25 Best Songs of 2013”. 

In 2014, the group proceeded to release their net mixtape “No Label 2” which was met with positive reviews and was even certified gold by Patdiff. A few months later, they made a deal with “300 Entertainment: and made an album titled “Young Rich Nation”. The album contained songs like “One Time” which managed to get into the “Billboard Hot 100” charts.

Migos then left their record label to become independent and released the single “Look at My Dab” under the mixtape “Back to the Bando”. Their next album “Culture” also gained critical success and had songs like “Bad and Boujee” which was able to peak at the Billboard charts. 

The group has also done several collaborations with popular artists like Lil Wayne, Travis Scott, and Pharell Williams.

Awards and Achievements

With the success that the group has on the music industry, they’ve managed to get nominated with a few awards and even won a few. They got nominated for several “BET Awards”, “MTV Music Awards” from America and Europe, and also a “Grammy Award” for “Best Rap Performance” and “Best Rap Album”.

The group has also won three BET Awards in their career. Back in 2017, they won “Best Group” and also “Best Collaboration” for their song “Bad and Boujee ft. Lil Uzi Vert”. They’ve also won “Best Duo/Group” in 2018. 

Controversies and Legal Issues

Throughout their career, the group has had several run-ins with the law and has been detained and some of them even got incarcerated at one point. In 2013, Offset had to go to jail after violating his probation from being convicted of theft. 

In 2015, when the security in the 2015 Spring Concert in Georgia detected the scent of marijuana in their van. The group and their entourage were then arrested for possession of drugs and also for bringing firearms in a school safety zone. Offset was later charged for inciting a riot inside the jail and caused severe injury to an inmate.

Quavo

Quavo has also joined a rap duo along with Travis Scott called “Huncho Jack” and has also released his first solo album back in 2018 titled “Quavo Huncho”. He’s also currently dating the rapper Saweetie and has also been linked to the model Karrueche Tran.

Offset

Offset is currently married to the rapped Cardi B. They were wedded back in 2017 and had a child named Kulture Kiari Cephus by 2018. He also has three other children from his earlier relationships, a son named Jordan and Kody, and also a daughter named Kaela.

Takeoff

Aside from Migos, Takeoff has also ventured as a solo artist and has already released his first album “The Last Rocket” in 2018.

The album contained songs like “Last Memory” which reached the 44th spot on the “Billboard 200”.
