Dirtbike racing is a sport where riders race dirtbikes over various types of obstacles and through different terrains. Professional racers compete in several different types and levels of races throughout the year.
In dirtbike racing, there are many categories that can be split into multiple classifications. These categories include motocross, supercross, enduro, grand national cross country, World off-road championship series, Grand Prix, hare and hound, enduro cross, trials, and freestyle.
Motocross/Supercross
Motocross
Motocross is a type of dirt bike racing that takes place on a closed course that is filled with jumps, berms, and other obstacles. The races are usually short, lasting only a few minutes, and the courses are designed to test the riders’ skills and abilities. Supercross

The main difference between motocross and supercross is that a motocross race takes place on a closed course with natural obstacles, while a supercross race takes place on an artificially-made course with man-made obstacles.
Enduro
Enduro is a type of dirt bike racing where the course consists of many different obstacles and terrains. Racers must not only be able to ride through different areas but also carry their own gear during the race.
The bikes used for enduro races are designed with durability and reliability in mind and they often do not include any special parts or modifications that would make them better for one terrain than another. Enduro racing can feature multiple vehicle types including open class (four stroke), restricted class (two stroke), girl’s class, junior (nine to 14 years old), and super-mini.
Enduro Cross
In an enduro cross race, riders cover courses that can range from 1-3 miles (1.6-4.8 km) with obstacles such as mud pits, dry creek beds, water crossings and more. The races are often based in wooded areas and may be an entire day in length where the winner is determined by the rider who finishes with the best overall time or makes it through all of the laps first. Enduro cross bikes are similar to enduro bikes but they feature less aggressive tread patterns on their tires for better performance in deep mud and other types of softer terrain.
Grand National Cross Country
The Grand National Cross Country is a professional off-road rally racing series. The races are held in many different locations around the world with course types ranging from desert, mud, sand, rocks, hills, and more.
The vehicles used for this type of racing include two wheel drive buggies, four wheel drive buggies or trucks, and unlimited single seaters. Riders compete through several national and international races during the early stages of the season before heading overseas for elite cross country events where they can win prize money and points that will help them qualify for the championship race at the end of the season. World Off-Road Championship Series
World off-road championship series
The World Off-Road Championship Series, or WORCS for short, is an off-road racing series that takes place in different locations around the world. All of the events take place on dirt tracks with hills and jumps.
Racers compete in several different vehicle types including two wheel drive trucks, four wheel drive trucks, and four wheel drive buggies. The type of vehicles used depends on the track design and layout as well as the rules set by each individual race promoter. Grand Prix
Grand prix
The Grand Prix motorcycle racing championship is a professional motorcycle road racing competition where riders race motorcycles supplied by manufacturers such as Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and others.
Riders only use bikes from their contracted manufacturer which means they can not switch to another brand if they feel like it will improve their chances of winning. The GP motorcycles are built for road racing and are not appropriate for the other types of dirtbike races.
Hare and Hound
Similar to hare and hound, Hare Scramble is a type of dirt bike race where riders have to navigate through several different obstacles on their way through the course. Riders often have to go up or down steep hills, over large jumps, across streams, rocks, logs, ruts, etc., depending on what terrain they are racing in.
Unlike hare scrambles though, hound races feature many more laps that can sometimes cover the same trail multiple times throughout a race day. The vehicles used for this type of racing varies based on the track design but some vehicles that are commonly used include four wheel drive trucks, two-wheeled bikes, and quads.
Trials
A form of dirt bike racing that is typically done on shorter courses that feature a lot of obstacles. Riders must navigate their way through the obstacles while maintaining control of their bike, and the winner is determined by who completes the course in the shortest amount of time.
Freestyle
Freestyle dirtbike racing is a type of racing where the riders attempt to complete stunts and tricks while riding their bike. The course is usually filled with obstacles such as jumps, ramps, and logs that the riders can use to perform their tricks. The winner is determined by who completes the course in the shortest amount of time and with the most impressive tricks.
