‘Vinland Saga’ or ‘Vinrando Saga’ is a Japanese historical manga that features a story genre of history, epic, and adventure of a character.

The manga series was written by Makoto Yukimura and published by Kodansha. The comic imprint was done by Afternoon KC. Its original run was from April 2005 until the present time with a total of 24 ongoing volumes.

The anime television series was directed by Shuhei Yabuta and produced by Mitsuhiro Sugita, Yoko Ueda, and Naokado Fujiwara. It was created by Wit Studio, licensed by Prime Video, released on NHK General TV. The series made its original run from July 2019 to December 2019, with a total of 24 episodes.

Vinland is a reference to two of the Norse Sagas. Its setting is during the ruling of the Dane in England, starting in the 11th century. It showcases the time during the Danish invaders of England, who are very well known as the ‘Vikings’.

This is a unique tale that merges the story of King Cnut the Great historical rise into power and a revenge-centered plot on one of the country’s explorers named ‘Thorfinn’. Thorfinn was the son of a murdered warrior that served under a mercenary group that killed him.

Vinland Saga Season 1

Before we dive into the topic of the second season of the Vinland Saga, let us go back to the first season to give us a good glimpse of what to expect.

The story setting is in 1013 AD, in England. During this time, it was reigned by the Danish King Sweyn Forkbeard. As the king is approaching the end of his life, his two sons, Prince Canute and Prince Harald argue about the king’s throne for succession. Historic elements of the story period are highlighted such as The Saga of Erik the Red, The Saga of the Greenlanders, and The Flateyjarbok.

In Season 1, It shows the story of his father being murdered by the same mercenary group that he deserted from a sea battle, years ago. Then follows Thorfinn and his journey with his father’s killer in a plot of vengeance to kill his life in a duel. He wants to fight him head-on as a warrior’s honor and for the homage of his father.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Plot

Season 1 ended with Askeladd, as he tries to sway King Sweyn not to attack the land of Whales, which is his hometown. The King then responded to Askeladd to choose between Whales or Canute. Frustrated and furious at the response, Askeladd kills and decapitates the King.

Knowing what has happened, Canute took the opportunity to kill Askeladd to show his dedication and claim to the throne. Thorfinn hastily went into the throne room only to find himself devastated by what happened. He was forever robbed of his vengeance. His anger made him attack Canute, where Thorkell apprehended and captured him.

In the second season of the series, the story will pick up from volume 8, chapter 55 of the manga series. Season 2 will most likely start with the ‘Slave Arc’. Canute is fully aware of how Thorfinn feels about his revenge and he understood that it was his life’s motivation. As a prisoner, Canute will not result in killing Thorfinn but rather have him become a slave. He will be then sent to a farm to work with the compassionate and kind farmer named Ketil. Knowing that Askeladd is already dead, Thorfinn might finally settle his peace there.

The historic story of Canute will lean on his work on how to combine his power in the state of Denmark and England.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Characters

The story revolves around the life of the main characters and supporting characters. Here are the names of notable characters with their original voice actors.

The main characters are Askeladd, voiced by Uchida Naoya, Canute voiced by Ono Kensho, and Thorfinn voiced by Uemura Yuuto.

The supporting characters are Ake, the family of Anne, Anne, Ari, Asgeir, Asser, Atli, Bjorn, Ear, Einar, Erikson, Faxi, Floki, Sweyn Forkbeard, Gorm, Gratianus, Grimm, and several others more.

We can expect in the second season of the series the main characters grew over time. There will be some characters that will be lost in the scenes and there will be new ones as the story progresses. There might be new characters that could change the very nature of the plot, depending on the producer’s point of view on how the story will act. Maybe they will add some fillers to build up a character background story.

Most of the story characters will revolve and follow the volumes, chapters, and episodes of the manga series. But, sometimes animation shows tend to add side stories that are relevant to a character or a twist in the plot.

Nevertheless, fans and viewers are excited to see the next season of the Vinland Saga.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Release date

The Vinland Saga management and production team have not yet released any official information on when the second season will be airing. As the first season has successfully ended, we can look forward to the second season starting its progress.

Most likely the production will start the course on the second season in September 2020. There is only a hint of an art sketch done by Yabuta that was posted on Twitter, portraying the characters, silently speaking of the second season.

Fans and viewers got excited when there were easter eggs on every artwork.

This was easily neutralized by Yabuta stating in comments that there was no meaning behind those easter eggs.

We can only expect to eagerly wait for an update from the production team.
