When he was a teenager, he spent most of his time in the garage listening to rock music. It was also during this time that he worked with a senior Japanese man at a dojo from Garden Grove. His friendly Japanese co-worker was the one who encouraged him to visit Japan, which he did between 1971 to 1973.
Seagal returned to California in 1974, when he met Miyako Fujitani, who is a second-degree black belt and the daughter of an Osaka aikido master, who teaches aikido in Los Angeles. When she returned to Osaka, Japan, Seagal followed her and they both married a year later, having a son and daughter.
Seagal worked as a teacher in his wife’s family-owned school. He then went to Taos, New Mexico, together with his student Craig Dunn. They opened a dojo together, though Seagal spends most of his time in other ventures.
He spent more time in Japan and returned to the United States with student Haruo Matsuoka in North Hollywood, where they opened an aikido dojo, which was moved to West Hollywood.
