Nancy Patricia D’Alesandro Pelosi is her complete name. She was born on Mar. 26, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland. Nancy was the youngest child of the family. She has six siblings and she is the only girl.

Nancy has a politically active family. Her parents were both from Italy. Her father was a Democratic Congressman from Maryland as she was born. Later on, her father became the Mayor of Baltimore.

She has a brother who also became the Mayor of Baltimore. He is Thomas D’Alesandro III. He served as a Mayor from 1967 to 1971. Also, Nancy’s mother is not an exception. Mrs. D’Alesandro actively organized Democrat women in the Democratic Party.

Political Career #1: Intern

In 1960, Pelosi started as an intern for Senator Daniel Brewster (D-Maryland). Then, she moved to San Francisco, California where she befriended the 5th District Congressman, Phillip Burton.

 In 1976, Pelosi was elected as a Democratic National Committee member from California. She stayed a little long and served in that position until 1996. She also experienced doing jobs in different capacities within the Democratic Party during the 1970s and 1980s. For example, she became a Finance Chair of the Democratic of Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Burton passed away in 1983 and his wife, Sala, succeeded in his position. Sala Burton came to a point she no longer wished to run for re-election. Because of that, she designated Pelosi as her successor. Nancy was fully kept up by Philip Burton’s supporters.

Political Career #2: Congresswoman

When Sala Burton passed away in a mere month of her second term, Pelosi won the special election and sat in the office as the 5th District Congresswoman in June 1987. Pelosi represented the 5th District from 1987 to 1993. She represented that 8th District from 1993 to 2013. And then, she constituted the 12th District from 2013 up to April 2020.

Nancy’s Other Political Careers

Nancy became the Leader of the House of Minority Whip (2002 to 2003). She led the House of Democratic Caucus since 2003. She served the House of Minority from 2003 to 2007, 2011 to 2019.

In 2019, she was sworn-in again as a Speaker of the House of Representatives. However, Nancy has to agree about her role being limited to four years only.
