Background

Maria Luisa Kahlo Cardeña is a half-sister of the famous Frida Kahlo. Her other siblings are Margarita Kahlo Cardena, Cristina Kahlo, Maria Kahlo Cardena, and Adriana Kahlo Calderón.

She was born on September 9, 1894, in Tacubaya, Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico City, Mexico. Their father is Guillermo Kahlo and Maria Cadeña Espina.

Maria Luisa also had the love of her life. She married Jose Jesus Escanes on April 7, 1917. Her spouse was also from Mexico.

Maria Luisa died on January 19, 1989, in Azcapotzalco, Mexico City, Mexico. She was 94 years old when she died. Her body was buried in Mexico City, Mexico.

About Maria Luisa’s Sister- Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907. She was born in Coyoacán, Mexico. She was younger than Maria Luisa Kahlo Cardeña.

It was one of Mexico’s leading schools. She grew up during the Mexican Revolution where she witnessed many incidents of violence and struggles.

She learned photography from her father, Guillermo Kahlo, who was a very good architectural photographer in his time. Her father taught her to use the camera. This experience helped her in later endeavors.

The Bus Accident

In 1925, she became an apprentice under Fernando Fernandez who was a commercial paint maker. She learned the basics of drawing and copy printing. However, it was a very unfortunate event when a bus accident happened.

It was on September 17, 1925, when Frida Kahlo suffered serious injuries because of the bus accident. She was inside traveling when they hit a trolley car. She experienced multiple injuries.

Frida Kahlo’s Painting Career

Frida Kahlo was a very well-known Mexican painter. She was great and known for her self-portraits. She was into Surrealism and combined it with traditional Mexican folk art. It made her paintings a symbolic form of self-expression.

Frida was very talented. She was a self-taught artist who had not thought painting would be her future career. But, she became one!

It was a tragic incident that left her severely injured. It changed her destiny. That incident was the reason she started painting.

It’s her past-time while recovering from the injury. She also treated it as a medium to convey her pain and suffering.

She has many notable works.

She also painted “Self-Portrait with Monkey” and “What the Water Gave Me”, Not to mention her amazing portrait, “The Dream (Bed)”. She was considered one of the best-known artists of the 20th century.

It was painful suffering to spend her entire life being infertile and disabled. It led to an unhappy marital life. But, she had several affairs and became the most sexually liberated woman of her time.

Frida Kahlo Awards

In 1926, she became a member of the Young Communist League. She has this famous painting entitled “Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird”. She was wearing a necklace of thorns in that painting representing herself as a victim.

It was showcased in more than 25 museums in the United States. That painting was also showcased in Australia, Canada, France, and Spain.

Frida Kahlo received the Nobel Prize for Arts and Sciences in 1946. It was granted by the Ministry of Public Education.
